I have experience working on the following formats:

  • Print magazines
  • Fiction & non-fiction books
  • Training manuals
  • Websites
  • Student papers, up to PhD level
  • Children’s stories
  • Print and digital marketing materials
  • Video subtitles and on-screen text
  • Mailshots
  • Annual reports
  • Tourist guides
  • Articles
  • Business directories
  • UK ⇒ US English, and vice versa

I am an autodidact by nature and as such am generally happy to tackle subjects that fall outside my areas of expertise. However, due to my experience, interests and qualifications, there are certain subjects I am particularly well-suited to. The following list is not exhaustive as I read widely, devour documentaries and am interested in a lot of things. If your subject matter doesn’t appear here, do please get in touch anyway.

Because of my degree:

  • English language
  • English literature, including its history
  • Cultural theory – this includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Gender studies
    • Foreign film & literature
    • Comics studies (my dissertation was a semiotic analysis of a graphic novel)
    • Philosophy
    • Aesthetics
    • Media & communication
    • Art history
  • Linguistics
  • Semiotics
  • Philology
  • Creative writing
  • Theatre studies

Because of my other achievements, qualifications and experience:

  • Music, including theory & history – I am a grade-8-level pianist and singer, and member of a professional choir
  • Kung Fu & other martial arts – I have a black belt in Wing Chun
  • The tattoo & body-modification industry – I was a professional body piercer in a well-established tattoo studio for more than ten years
  • The primal & paleo diet and lifestyle – this has been my preferred diet and lifestyle for many years
  • French language & culture – I lived and attended school in France for several years*
  • The ‘crunchy’ lifestyle – I am a very crafty (no, I don’t mean devious!) person and like to make and do things for myself, be it crocheting blankets, keeping backyard chickens, making my own cleaning & beauty products, or raw-feeding my two dogs and five cats
  • Animals generally – the two dogs, five cats and chickens mentioned above aren’t my only current pets, and I have kept many more, of many different varieties, over the years, including horses, various rodents, reptiles, birds and fish (I’ve even had a pair of axolotls and a tarantula)
  • Poker, in particular NLHE – I may have won a tournament or three, both live and online
  • Coding for programmers – note that I am not a programmer and cannot check the accuracy of any code in your text; however, I have edited and/or proofread more than 200 titles in this area and am familiar with the language and terminology used

Because of my special interests and areas of personal study:

  • History, especially medieval and earlier
  • Anthropology
  • Religion, especially pre-Christian and world religions
  • Home-education
  • Nutrition
  • Holistic health practices
  • Spirituality
  • Popular science
  • Politics – at home and abroad
  • Sustainable living

*Although I speak fluent French and have an Advanced Certificate from the Institute of Linguists, I do not get many opportunities these days to speak or write it. I therefore do not offer editing in French or English ⇒ French translation at this time. If you have something non-technical you would like translated from French to English, I may well be able to help. I will not take on work I do not feel I can do justice to. If you are a French speaker writing in English I can definitely help iron out any issues of language that may be lost in translation.
