Although I base my fees on the SfEP’s suggested minimum rates, you can probably guess it’s very difficult to provide a set price for the kind of work I do and my fee will vary depending on a number of factors:

  • The type and length of your work – a full-length novel, journal article or business website and marketing material and so on
  • How long the work is likely to take
  • The level of editing required – if you do not come from a publishing background, this may surprise you
  • Your preferred schedule – I charge a premium of 50% for short-deadline or evening work and 100% for weekends and bank holidays (I put this extra money towards doing fun things with my children to make up for time with them lost)
  • Whether we have or are likely to develop an ongoing working relationship
  • Whether any problems crop up with your word count, manuscript or timeline after work has commenced – in such cases, I reserve the right to renegotiate my fee and/or deadline, or make the decision to discontinue the work
  • Who you are – for instance, if you’re a charitable organisation or state-funded school, I provide a 10% discount
  • When you pay – I provide a 5% discount for payment upfront, in addition to any other discounts given

In order to help both of us decide whether or not to work together, please provide the following details, along with anything else you feel is relevant, when you first get in touch:

  • The type of work
  • Word count / number of web pages
  • If your work is in hard copy, .docx (or similar) format or PDF, a sample of at least 1,000 words, if the work is that long, preferably from somewhere in the middle
  • If your work is a website, a URL, if live, or some PDF screenshots of any unpublished content
  • The level of editing you think your work requires – note that unless you are a publisher, our opinions about this may differ and I will inform you if that is the case after I have checked your sample
    • If you are a new self-publishing author, it is extremely unlikely your manuscript will be ready for the services I provide on the first draft. Please ensure your work has been through some kind of developmental editing process, beta reading and/or a professional critique before getting in touch.
  • Your deadline/preferred turnaround time
  • The date your document/website/other material will be available for me to commence work
  • Acknowledgement that you have read and agreed to my Terms and Conditions (download links at the bottom of this page)
  • The most reliable means of contacting you – work may be slowed down immeasurably if I cannot reach you to clarify any issues that crop up during the course of my work
  • If you are a student, please see here for information specific to student work, along with a separate set of Terms & Conditions

Please note that a minimum charge of two hours at the suggested rates linked to above will apply to short work such as newsletters, articles of 1,000 words or fewer, or fliers. Time spent doing admin for small jobs is the same as for larger ones and my fee for such work reflects this. Also, remember that well-presented, accurate work reflects well on you and your business and pays for itself over time. It can be embarrassing and expensive to reprint thousands of fliers, for example, because of a missed typo or inaccurate price.
